This Season; This Chapter Is Ending....

Jaqui MacMillan led our drum circle to honor the ancestors last Saturday night. Fifteen others came. We honored our blood ancestors and those who have inspired us. "Pure love," said one participant. "Perfect!" said another. Thank you, Jaqui!

A NEW CHAPTER: As this season ends, I am feeling called to start a new chapter. The details are still sketchy: what is clear is that a new farmer or farmers are needed to manage the farm day-to-day. I am working on a job posting and asking those who are so moved to pray and send energy that the next right people come to the farm before the start of next season.

LONG-RANGE PLANNING: The dream for White Rose Farm still holds: a place to connect people with the beauty, bounty and balance of nature. I am working with an economic development specialist to develop a model featuring overnight stays at the farm, farm experiences and great produce as a way to make the farm both financially sustainable and fulfill its dream.

THE LAST PRODUCE: This will probably be the last season where my hands are the primary hands this land knows. I'd like to offer a special harvest bounty: Butternut squash, sweet potatoes and a gallon bag of salad greens for $25 to be delivered before Thanksgiving. We also have cooking greens (Swiss Chard), turnips and Daikon Radish, pick two for an additional $10. Your purchase will help me and the farm prepare for our next chapter.

In the meantime, our events continue:

A TIME TO BE: A Woman's Retreat:  Our next retreat will be Saturday, December 16 from 10:30 to 1:30 p.m.

GLOBAL SISTERHOOD GATHERING: Our next gathering will be on Saturday, November 18 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Retreat House.

The leaves are coming!  On Mondays and Tuesdays, two local towns deliver bags of leaves to the farm--some 2,000 every year! We make giant leaf piles and use them to improve the organic matter in the soil. Come help us open the bags of leaves! (Just let us know you are coming) and take home some great food!

Seeds for Puerto Rico! Farmer, Tom Simpson of Independence, Virginia, is buying and sending seeds to Rincon, Puerto Rico, where his daughter lived until recently. Because Tom is a farmer and his daughter a local, they know what kinds of seeds to send and where to send them. If you would like to contribute, send a check made out to The Church of the Good Shepherd-GALAX to Tom Simpson, 354 Two Rivers Road, Independence, VA 24348.

Feeling the brace of change in the air,

Sally
